Center for Sports Medicine & Orthopedics

Project Information

TWH/MBI was approached about the possibility of doubling the size of one of Chattanooga’s premier orthopedic and sports medicine facilities.  The existing 15,000 square foot building was located on the edge of the downtown area and sits on a rather restricted site.  TWH/MBI successfully expanded the clinic space to be twice as large as before.  We also added an imaging suite which houses a 1.5 Tesla MRI system.  Waiting, accounting, and other support spaces were added as well.

Exam rooms are organized into pods of ten to twelve rooms towards the east end of the building.  Two physicians and multiple support staff cover each pod of rooms.  Each area has dedicated X-Ray, surgery scheduling, cast rooms, nurse stations, and other support spaces.  The center of the building houses a large waiting area, reception desk, and offices.  The design created an open “entry spine” to bring in ample natural light and help avoid the compressed and cramped sort of space found in waiting rooms all too often.  The western half of the building houses a full physical therapy clinic (including a hydrotherapy pool), accounting offices, and the MRI suite.
