University Student Center Renovation & Expansion

Project Information

The original Student Center was designed and constructed in the 1960’s with a renovation in the 1980’s. The growing University needed a larger and more up-to-date Student Center. TWH/MBI was selected to design an 80,000 SF expansion that would more than double the size of the existing building. The kitchen and dining areas were completely renovated, expanded, and updated. The dining room, which serves the entire student population including the campus residents, was divided into different levels, configurations, and areas. Decorative screens and canopies provide a sense of enclosure while providing transparency. We worked closely with the University and their food service vendor to provide a new kitchen, serving area, and food court. A new two-level atrium and entrance lobby was created to the west to provide a new and exciting entrance to the student center and campus. Inherent in the design of the three-level facility are multiple student activity areas, including computer labs and meeting rooms for collaboration, meditation, and interaction. The new facility also includes a 300-person auditorium, student activities operations, and a pedestrian mall through the center of the building that connects public areas such as the dining room, student lounge, meeting rooms, lecture halls, student convenience store, and bookstore.
