TWH/MBI was selected by the City of Chattanooga to design a wellness facility for City Employees. The site is a brownfield site approximately three blocks from City Hall on East 11th Street. Guiding principles of sustainable design including daylighting, reflective roof, solar water heating collectors, large overhangs and indirect daylighting enhance the quality of space and save energy.
The 22,500 SF faculty houses a state of the art fitness facility primary care and occupational health clinics, pharmacy, and staff offices. A working/teaching kitchen is also a part of this facility. The building exterior is highlighted by roof monitors facing north which flood the interior all day long with glare-free indirect light. In addition, the fitness area is wrapped in glass providing added light and views for those exercising. Even the locker and showers are lit by clerestories. Interior finishes are consistent with the building’s sustainable principles designed to be easily maintained. Floors in public areas, offices, and pharmacy are polished stained concrete. The structure is exposed in the fitness facility and public areas to provide more spatial volume and natural lighting.
